The Evolution and Impact of Prosthetic Arms: Transforming Lives and Enhancing Abilities

prosthetic arms

Prosthetic arms have come a long way from their basic and simple designs to integrating advanced technologies, significantly enhancing the experience for amputees. These designs with new technologies are gaining popularity for all the right reasons.

Here in this blog, we will discuss the evolution of prosthetic hands from their basic designs to today’s modern technologically advanced bionic arm with advanced features.

Tracing Back the History and Milestones

Prosthetic hands have been around in civilization for centuries and thousands of years. However, the very first designs certainly lacked a lot of basic elements such as convenience, comfort, and even flexibility.

Back in the ancient days these prosthetic hands were made using the basic raw materials and elements present in nature such as wood and metal. These prosthetics offered basic functions such as holding things, walking, or a simple grip.

It was during the Industrial revolution that prosthetic designs became a bit sophisticated as new technologies and methods were being developed and introduced in the industry. This allowed the designs to become more comfortable, flexible and offer a convenient approach. However, these were still limited in terms of the functionality and features.

Moreover, these prosthetics were made using different elements such as iron, steel, and plastics which further allowed these designs to become lighter and more easy to carry around by the users. Although still lacking the advanced features, these prosthetic hands were still an improvement from the wooden and iron clad prosthetic arm that were being used.

With time as technology became more advanced and new technologies were discovered, it was then only the myoelectric prosthetic arm was introduced. This came as a revolutionary change in the industry and grabbed the attention of all. This consisted of the sensors which enabled the users with better control and comfort in the use of a prosthetic arm.

This further established the grounds for more advanced, AI-integrated and advanced prosthetic arm and bionic arm to be introduced for enhancing the overall lifestyle for the people with disabilities. This allowed them to gain more control over the movements of the prosthetic and get more natural response and movement.

Technological Advancements

In recent years, prosthetic arm technology has made major advancements, mainly owing to the new and advanced technology, and tools available. One such element is the robotic prosthetic arm, lighter and more comfortable raw materials, and advances in biomedical engineering as well.

These modern prosthetic arms are lighter in weight, highly durable, and offer various advantages and added features for convenient use. These can easily mimic the natural hand movements and gestures which provides the prosthetic arm a new place in the life of the amputees and people with disabilities. This also proves that people have better control, convenience, and comfort in using these prosthetic hands.

One of the most important factors to be considered here is the use of sensors, advanced AI technology, and other sensor based motors that offer better grip, control and help to mimic the natural hand gestures.

In addition to this, the use of lightweight materials such as carbon fibers is further enabling these prosthetic hands to become more comfortable, convenient, and easy to use for the users. It not only adds to the convenience but also provides better accessibility for the users as well.

Prosthetic Arm: Impacting Individuals

Prosthetics are making a huge difference and impact in people’s lives. These not only work as a replacement for the lost limbs but also work as a morale boost and confidence for their life. These prosthetic hands allow them to perform their everyday tasks and focus on the basic needs of the users such as holding and gripping objects, cooking, driving, exercising, and others.

With Symbionic’s Krea prosthetic arm, you can even carry out athletic activities, performing exercises and carrying out everyday tasks. It further allows you to carry and lift up heavy objects if required. This not only enhances the ability to perform their everyday tasks but provides them with a confidence boost and allows them to lead a confident life ahead.

Another impact that these prosthetic hands have is that they allow the users to further accept this new addition to their lives, perform better, and battle through the challenges of life. To feel accepted in society, having a prosthetic arm boosts their confidence.

Future Possibilities

Developing a prosthetic arm is one of the most advanced processes that is going on in the biomedical field. However, the process is complicated as well which makes it difficult for the researchers to develop more advanced features for these prosthetic hands.

For this, the use of sensors and advanced AI technology is being integrated to make the overall process of using bionic arms with better control, comfort, convenience, and flexibility.

Concluding Points

From the above discussion, it is evident that prosthetic hands have been transformed using advanced technologies. From the ancient prosthetic arm to today’s modern bionic arm and robotic prosthetic arm the advances have allowed the disabled people to get a  new start for their life and perform even the basic tasks of everyday with confidence and lead an independent life.

With brands like Symbionic, the experiences of the team has allowed them to understand the requirements from a deeper level and offer solutions with enhanced features and accessibility. In addition to offering these prosthetic arms, the brand also provides trial sessions, and counseling sessions for the users to enable them to make a better, informed decision regarding their life changes and the requirements.

How it began.

September 15th, 2018

Rishi (aged 24) was travelling on a bus with a fellow volunteer.

Unfortunately, the bus crashed with an oncoming vehicle minutes before he could step off the bus. Rishi was left with a mangled right arm.

Doctors ruled out any possibility of saving Rishi's arm and decided to amputate it in order to save his life.

Co-Founder & CEO

Our founder and CEO, Rishi Krishna, was 24 years old when he met with a catastrophic accident that changed the course of his life. The accident led to the amputation of his right arm. But instead of allowing the catastrophic event put a full stop to his dreams, he decided to leverage his pain to build a better world.

It was striking, that despite such extraordinary technology development around the world, Rishi and millions of people like him were unable to find a solution. This lit a fire in Rishi as he decided to build Symbionic.

What began as a small group of young hackers & engineers has grown to include engineers, experts, social workers, and designers – along with an incredible group of doctors, clinicians, and non-profits working in the developing world.
